Safety Manager

The Opportunity

As part of the Safety & Compliance team, the Safety Manager is responsible for developing, monitoring and implementing the company’s safety policies to ensure the organization is compliant with transportation legislation. This role works to reduce or prevent workplace hazards, dangers and incidents.

Please note that this role will be primarily based out of the Elgin office in London, ON with occasional travel (approximately 1-2 days every other week) to Challenger’s head office in Cambridge, ON.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Monitors and manages driver safety performance.
  • Provides direction, support and resource to all managers, supervisors and employees regarding regulatory and safety issues or concerns.
  • Creates and updates safety policies and programs.
  • Provides recommended changes to safety procedures to ensure company’s compliance with applicable legislation.
  • Leads workplace safety committees for all company locations.
  • Prepares reports, newsletters and forms relating to company’s safety programs.
  • Conducts workplace inspections and records results; takes required actions to ensure compliance.
  • Investigates and documents workplace injuries.
  • Develops and delivers safety-training programs to all employees.
  • Performs other duties as required.

What you need to be successful in the role:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Health and Safety or a related field
  • Minimum five (5) years of management and/or progressive health and safety experience.
  • Prior work experience in the transportation industry.
  • Specific knowledge of The Workplace Safety and Health Act, Canada Labour Code Part II and Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Specific working knowledge of FMCSA and Canadian transportation regulations.
  • Knowledge of current Workplace Health and Safety issues.
  • Experience in collision reduction in the transportation industry.
  • Detail and deadline oriented, with the ability to effectively prioritize and multi-task in a busy environment.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, relationship building and interpersonal skills.
  • Proactive attitude, takes initiative to prevent issues, and has a bias towards action.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively and independently with individuals at various levels is required.
  • A continuous improvement focus on work.
  • Well-organized, enthusiastic, professional and a positive team member.
